Understanding Class B RVs
Class B camper vans, also known as Class B RVs, are one of three different types of recreational vehicles. In the RV (or motorhome) market, there are Class A, B, and Class C RVs. Before discussing what a Class B RV is, let’s first discuss Class A and C motorhomes.
Class A motorhomes are the largest and most expensive type of RV. They are built on a gigantic chassis, sometimes reaching 45 feet long. They feature all the amenities that a regular house with wheels would have and are ideal for large families, retired snowbirds, or traveling rock bands. Despite being tricky to maneuver and guzzling gas, Class A motorhomes are really quite luxurious inside.
Class C RVs are the second largest type of motorhome. They are built on a regular truck or van chassis but feature an attached cab in the back with a living space. They are good for couples and can accommodate a small family. Regarding amenities, Class C RVs look and feel a lot like larger motorhomes, just on a smaller footprint. Therefore, Class C motorhomes are basically a hybrid model between Class A and B RVs.

What is a Class B RV?
A Class B RV is the smallest, most maneuverable, and fuel-efficient type of motorhome. They are built on a panel truck or automotive van chassis and are normally no longer than 24 feet long. Despite their smaller size, Class B camper vans can feature kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping spaces as well as amenities like running water and electricity.

“Class B camper vans cannot fit a bathroom and shower”
They sure can, and they do! While it’s true that not all Class B RVs have a toilet and shower, it is false to say they can’t contain them. Most Class B camper vans can be equipped with both a shower and a toilet.
Doing so requires a little bit of creativity and multi-purpose functionality. For example, an outdoor shower works great and doesn’t waste any space inside the RV! A cassette or composting toilet provides a more portable and easy-to-use option requiring no black water tanks.
“You cannot live full-time in a class B motorhome”

The LV5 is our mid-sized model. It’s perfect for solo van lifers who want a little extra room, or a pair of travelers. The LV5 is great as a vehicle for weekend warriors but is also roomy enough for longer trips and full-time living, thanks to its extra storage space and multiple-bed layouts.
The LV5.2 also has an option for a more robust electrical system for folks who require more energy to power their adventures or remote-working careers. In addition, you can select between a cassette toilet with our LV5.1 model and a composting toilet with our LV5.2 model.

The LV7
The LV7 is the largest van in our fleet. It features an extended wheelbase that is ideal for couples, small families, or solo travelers who need a multitude of gear. Thanks to the LV7’s space-efficient and ergonomic layout, this van is fully capable of full-time van life or awesome road trips.
Both the LV7.1 and LV7.2 vans come with a larger, more powerful electrical system. The LV7 also comes with a composting toilet for in-house comfort. And should you need room for more passengers, the LV7.2 comes with a second-row seat.

A quick note for dirt-road travelers out there– regardless of the model, none of our vans have any under-chassis tanks, running boards, or generators that can get ripped off or hit during off-road travel. This makes life so much easier when searching out some solace in the backcountry.

Life on the Road with a DM Van, Maintenance, and Upkeep
We like to think our vans are like a fine wine– they come ready to enjoy and possess a distinct flavor of high-quality craftsmanship. (And they get better as they age.) But if we’re being honest, we know that the longevity of one of our vans doesn’t just depend on the craftsmanship.
How you take care of the van is really important, too. So here are some tips for maintaining your DM van so it stays in tip-top shape.
- Safety system: maintain and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Cooling system: regularly check the coolant levels to prevent overheating.
- Fuel system: inspect and replace fuel filters and periodically add fuel additives to keep the system clean.
- Electrical system: monitor and maintain battery terminals, clean them if necessary, and inspect and tighten other electrical connections. Regularly keep batteries above 20% state of charge for a longer life span.
- Exhaust system: replace worn-out exhaust components and ensure your RV meets emission standards.
- Interior: regularly dust, vacuum, and wipe down interior surfaces, as well as clean and maintain interior appliances. Mitigate condensation by cracking a window or opening a vent while cooking.
- Exterior: wax and wash the exterior of the van, as well as inspect the windows, doors, vents, hatches, etc., for water leaks.
- Plumbing: perform regular inspections of water tanks, fixtures, and pipes.
- Appliances: periodically clean and defrost your refrigerator and regularly test and maintain entertainment systems
- Solar system: clean solar panels of debris and dust and inspect wiring connections to ensure they are secure
- HVAC system: periodically inspect the HVAC system, check the vents, and replace air filters. As preventative maintenance, run the heater on high heat for at least 20 minutes every 30 days.
