Benner Evansville Ind Irene Wilma (Long) Benner 91 of Evansville Indiana passed away Sunday October 16 2011 at Riverpointe Health Campus Irene was born in Bel-view Ohio on June 11 1920 to Wilma Olive (Johnson) Long and Albert Patrick Long She graduated from Central High School in 1938 where she sang in the choir Irene worked at several department stores in Evansville including Dress Shop Department Store and Neisners During World War II Irene did work for the American Red Cross In 1947 she married George Benner who had been in her class throughout grade school and high school She was president vice-president district secretary and an active member of Funk-houser Post Ladies Auxiliary for 71 years Together they moved to Los Alamos New Mexico where they lived for 47 years They coowned and operated Clem-ent-Benner Department Store in Los Alamos Irene and George sponsored many sports leagues and bowling teams over the years Also each year she directed several fashion shows in the area After 44 years in New Mexico she was glad to move back to Evansville to reconnect with family and friends but she still missed living in Los Alamos memberships include the Blue Grass United Methodist Church Irene is survived by her husband George Benner of Evansville her sister-in-law Joyce Benner of Evansville nieces and nephews Marilyn Solli-day Delores Rowans Jack Benner Charles in 1997 after 40 years of service at Whirlpool Corporation Tiger served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1956 and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1114 The highlight
